Evening primrose
oil is extracted from the evening primrose plant, a wildflower found
in North America, Europe and parts of Asia. The plant's pale yellow
flowers open in the evening--hence its common name--and its seeds bear
the special fatty oil that is used in healing today.
In another era, Native
Americans and the early settlers gathered the plant and its root to
treat such ailments as hemorrhoids, stomachaches, sore throat, and bruises.
Evening primrose oil contains omega-6 fatty
acid gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which is also produced naturally in
the body from linolenic acid obtained from the diet.
Scientists
have not figured out how exactly evening primrose oil exerts its effects,
but theorize that GLA has anti-inflammatory activity. Inflammation is
mediated in part by substances known as prostaglandins and leukotrienes,
both by-products of metabolism of arachidonic acid, a fatty acid in
cell membranes. GLA is able to reduce the formation of pro-inflammatory
prostaglandins and leukotrienes by replacing arachidonic acid in cell
membranes. GLA is a precursor of the prostaglandin PGE, which opposes
the inflammatory effects of leukotrienes and the prostaglandin PGE.

In conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, ageing, cancer, premenstrual
syndrome, eczema, high cholesterol conditions, and nutritional deficits, the
ability of the body to produce GLA from linolenic acid can be reduced. It
is thought that directly ingesting GLA will bypass this process, but there
is no evidence that replenishing GLA levels will reverse the effects of these
conditions.
