Glucosamine (Glucosamine sulfate,
Chitosamine) is substance found naturally in the body. Glucosamine is
a form of amino sugar that is believed to play a role in cartilage formation
and repair. Glucosamine are sold as dietary or nutritional supplements.
They are extracted from animal tissues such as crab, lobster or shrimp
shells. Glucosamine has been used for the alleviation of the symptoms
of arthritis, and aids in the recovery of some sports injuries.
It has been reported that glucosamine may be involved in the production
of cartilage that is important for healthy joints.
Glucosamine
is often combined with
Chondroitin

Benefits
Past studies show
that some people with mild to moderate osteoarthritis (OA) taking glucosamine
reported pain relief at a level similar to that of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory
drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin and ibuprofen. Some research indicates
that the supplements might also slow cartilage damage in people with OA.
Definitive results about the effects of these supplements are expected from
an in-depth clinical study currently being conducted by the National Institutes
of Health.

Side Effects
Side effects may include stomach problems,
heartburn or diarrhea, and labels usually recommended that glucosamine be
taken with food. People with histories of heart disease or high blood
pressure should consult with their health care providers before starting glucosamine
supplements, and glucosamine should not be taken while on heart medications
or with insulin. People with a shellfish allergy should not take glucosamine
supplements made from shellfish shells. Talk to your physician or nutritional
advisor about obtaining shellfish-free glucosamine.
Although uncommon, allergic reactions to
glucosamine have been reported. Stop taking glucosamine and seek emergency
medical attention if you experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction
including difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips,
tongue, or face; or hives.

Recommendations
Consult
your doctor about the proper dosage. The amount used in studies of glucosamine
was 1,500 mg per day.
You can try the supplements along with
your current medications for six to eight weeks. If you don't experience any
difference in your symptoms within a few months, you probably will not get
any relief from using the supplements.
The sulfate form of glucosamine (e.g.,
glucosamine sulfate) may be better absorbed by your body.
Children, women who are pregnant, and women
who could become pregnant should not take these supplements. They have not
been studied long enough to determine their effects on a child or on a developing
fetus.
Because glucosamine is an amino sugar,
people with diabetes should check their blood sugar levels more frequently
when taking this supplement.
If you are allergic to shellfish, consult
your doctor before deciding to take glucosamine. In most cases, however, allergies
are caused by proteins in shellfish, not chitin, a carbohydrate from which
glucosamine is extracted.
