Lecithin is a fatty
substance manufactured in the body and widely found in many animal and
plant based foods, including eggs, liver, peanuts, soybeans, and wheat
germ. Lecithin is often used as an additive in such processed foods
as ice cream, margarine, and salad dressings, because it helps blend
(or emulsify) fats with water. Lecithin is also available in supplement
form.
For decades, lecithin
has been used as a treatment for high cholesterol.
More recently, lecithin has been proposed
as a remedy for various psychological and neurological diseases, such
as Tourette's syndrome, Alzheimer's disease, and bipolar disorder (also
known as manic depression).
Lecithin contains a substance called
phosphatidylcholine (PC) that is presumed to be responsible for
its medicinal effects. Phosphatidylcholine is a major part of the membranes
surrounding our cells. However, when you consume phosphatidylcholine
it is broken down into the nutrient choline rather than being
carried directly to cell membranes.
Choline acts like folate, TMG
(trimethylglycine), and
SAMe
(S-adenosylmethionine) to promote methylation. It is also used to make
acetylcholine, a nerve chemical essential for proper brain function.

Uses
Specifically, phosphatidylcholine,
and in some cases lecithin or choline alone, may help to:
-
Treat memory loss or
impairment.
-
Protect the liver from
alcohol abuse and hepatitis. Phosphatidylcholine is believed to speed the
flow of fats and cholesterol through the liver, prevent the buildup of fats
within the liver, and assist the liver in eliminating dangerous toxins from
the body.
-
Prevent gallstones.

Sources
Neither lecithin nor
its ingredient phosphatidylcholine is an essential nutrient; however, choline
has recently been recognized as essential. For use as a supplement or a food
additive, lecithin is often manufactured from soy.
