Biotin, also commonly known as vitamin H, is a water-soluble member of the B-complex group of vitamins. The biochemical acts as a carrier for carbon dioxide in the pyruvate carboxylase reaction, where biotin is linked to the epsilon-amino group of a lysine residue in the enzyme. Biotin is necessary for both metabolism and growth in humans, particularly with reference to production of fatty acids, antibodies, digestive enzymes, and in niacin (vitamin B3) metabolism.  Biotin is a cofactor for enzymes that are involved in the metabolism of carbohydrate, fat, and protein. Enzymatic reactions involving biotin allow the transfer of carbon dioxide, CO2, in biochemical reactions that are essential for the metabolism of carbohydrates, fat, and protein.  As a coenzyme, biotin plays a role in the deamination, which generates energy from certain amino acids.  Biotin is involved in the formation of purines, an essential part of DNA and RNA.  Biotin helps in the maintenance of healthy sweat gland, nerve tissue, skin, hair and one marrow.   Read more below...

Food Sources

Biotin is widely distributed throughout the food supply, but some of the more concentrated sources of biotin include egg yolk, soybeans, cauliflower, mushroom, organ meats such as liver and kidney, yeast, cheese, barley, brewers yeast, milk, soy flour, cereal.   vgo to top

Side Effects

Although clinical deficiency of biotin is rare, it can occur from prolonged consumption of raw egg whites, which contains the biotin-binding protein, avidin. Avidin is destroyed by cooking. Deficiency can also occur from long-term total parenteral nutrition, a genetic defect in the biotin-dependent enzymes, or from malabsorption syndromes such as short-gut syndrome.

Some signs of biotin deficiency are:

    • dry, scaly skin

    • nausea

    • anorexia

    • seborrheic dermatitis

    • alopecia (hair loss)

    • conjunctivitis

    • neurological abnormalities

There are suggestions that biotin is also capable of curing baldness, alleviating muscle pain and depression, and functions as a cure for dermatitis, although there is no substantial evidence for any of these claims. Biotin deficiency results in fatigue, depression, nausea, muscle pains, hair loss, and anemia.

No toxic effects of oral biotin have been reported in humans or animals, even at doses up to 10 mg/day. Biotin is found in multivitamin/mineral supplements which typically contain between 30 ? 60 mcgs per daily dose.   vgo to top

Recommendations

The FDA's reference daily intakes (RDI) for Biotin is 0.3 mg.   vgo to top
